Setting: SPACE!
History: Kaylee, as she's known to pretty much everyone ever, did not have a spectacular life until she found herself on board Serenity. She grew up on an outer rim planet, and spent most of her time helping her father in his shop. That is where she learned her love for engines and mechanics, and, most importantly, her ability with them. When she was eventually hired on Serenity, she had no formal education to speak of.

As such, Kaylee never thought anything of her abilities and talents with mechanics, other than just a simple skill and passion she could use to help keep the Frye family in business, until she met a man named Bester. Bester was visiting with the crew of a ship named Serenity, and had recently been hired on as a mechanic. Wooing the starry-eyed girl with talk of ships and engines, Bester took her back to the engine room to show her what was going on under his hood.

The reason, he confessed, that Serenity was on her planet, was engine trouble; something he'd been struggling with for weeks. Kaylee, while preoccupied having sex with Bester, managed to identify the problem, and solution. When the Captain, Malcolm Reynolds, found the two of them in flagrant delicto Kaylee diagnosed the problem and, without even having put her shirt on, found herself hired as the new mechanic for the ship.

Saying goodbye to her mom and dad, Kaylee took to the stars with the rag-tag bunch of outlaws, and never once looked back. Though she was raised to be an upstanding citizen, growing up hard on her luck, she never had much problem bending and breaking the law in order to feed her family. So working for Browncoats, often smuggling and committing other wrongs, never bothered her. After all, she was hired to work on the engine. What the rest did wasn't her business.

But it became her business. She found friendship in the unlikely crew of Serenity, and even family. The Captan, Mal, became her brother, Wash, the pilot, something like an uncle, and Inara, the Companion who rented the shuttle from them, alternated between a sister, a friend, and a crush. Inara was everything Kaylee wanted to be: elegant, beautiful, worldly. Kaylee, meanwhile, was grease stained and poor. But comparison very rarely made her upset, instead, she tried to look on their differences as opportunities. Each woman helped the other in many different ways. That is not to say of Zoe, or even Jayne.

Things continued on as they would for Serenity. Crime, fun, games, shenanigans. That was, until Lawrence Dobson, a passenger they'd taken on, and an agent for the Alliance, shot her in the stomach. Innocent and shocked, Kaylee hovered on the edge of life and death, before she was attend to by the handsome surgeon, Simon Tam. Simon, in his class and handsomeness, managed to catch Kaylee's attention, much in the way Inara had. Though he lacked her social graces, Kaylee was drawn to him, and, in his debt, as he saved her life from the stomach wound.

With Simon, and his psychic sister on board, Kaylee knows that Serenity is in for hard times. But, she's with her family, and she knows that her ship has more than enough heart to deal with everything the 'verse has to toss at them.

Personality: The first thing anyone will tell you about Kaylee is that she is sunny to a fault. She tries to be cheerful almost always, having been taught to look on the bright side of life since she was born. She tries to find the silver lining in every cloud, and is very rarely foiled in that. She's been described as the heart of Serenity, and this is apt in any definition you can give it.

Serenity is an extension of herself, to a degree. As the mechanic, Kaylee pours her heart and soul into the inner-workings of the ship. She grows upset with herself when she fails to notice that she's breaking, and any time anyone dares to insult the ship, takes it personally. Serenity is a work of art, and she's in charge of keeping her running and looking shiny. She may not be the prettiest ship out there, but she runs the best, and Kaylee is proud of that.

Despite being the grease monkey that she is, Kaylee is extremely girly. Her overalls are covered in flowers and bears, and her bedroom proudly holds her floofy dress that she'd managed to convince Mal to buy her. She grew up in the dust, and as such, longs for traditional ideals of femininity and elegance. She can't do her own makeup, looks better in boots than heels, and can out-swear any sailor. And she takes pride in that. But she wants to be elegant. This is partially explained in her relationship to Inara, and how quick she was to accept being Mal's date to a proper fancy shindig.

Kaylee isn't educated; she received no formal education prior to being hired on Serenity. But she's smart. Very smart. The problem is that her language and way of carrying herself are far from upper-class. Using what we would call improper English, and often defaulting to Mandarin to curse, Kaylee sticks out like a sore thumb in proper company. She hasn't read the latest book, and certainly doesn't know the latest styles, but she'll charm your pants off by talking about things that interest her: engines, mechanics, ships.

When insulted, Kaylee tends to get easily flustered, storming off, unsure how to articulate herself. To protect herself, she'll throw out an insult, but that's only to get out of the room. She knows that she's got a long way to go before she can be beautiful and elegant like Inara, but that does't mean she's going to brush her hair every day and put on makeup to fix an engine. That's just not her.

It's safe to say that she's very self-conscious. Though she projects the image of being self-assured, and proud of herself (because she is proud of herself), she's very aware of how she was raised, and what environments she is in. But she doesn't believe that makes her sub-par. She just thinks it makes her a product of a different environment, not better or worse than anyone else, just different.

Kaylee is the little sister of all of Serenity. Sure, Jayne makes fun of her, as does Mal, but the second she's in danger or insulted, they'll drop anything to protect her, taking her side to the ends of the earth. She is the heart, she brings them all together, never thinking ill of anyone. But she's also their biggest weakness in that. But that doesn't mean she herself is weak. Kaylee, with her unique way of looking at their war-torn 'verse, wants to see all of it, and truly believes in the good of everyone. And she has yet to be proven wrong.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Kaylee is a young woman in her mid-twenties without any super-powers. Her physical weaknesses are those of the average twenty-something woman, as well as her mental ones. She is human, and uneducated.

Kaylee is also a genius when it comes to engines. "They just talk to her," in her words. Her intuition comes into play when it comes to engines. It's a third language to her.

Speaking of languages, she speaks two: English and Mandarin Chinese. Though they aren't called that in her 'verse, she knows both of them well enough to get along. Though Chinese is most often used for "rude" languages.

Kaylee is useless in a firefight. Afraid of gunfire thanks to a great wound in her stomach, she prefers to hide and close her eyes rather than look. If you need backup, she'll be doing it somewhere where there isn't a gun.

Inventory: -One pair boots
-One pair over-alls (grease-stained)
-One flower-patterned blouse
-One parasol

Appearance: Jewel Staite

'Beautiful' is not a word that would be used to describe Kaylee. If anything, she's cute. With pale skin, hazel eyes and lackluster brown hair, Kaylee is used to being ignored in favor of far more physically pleasing young women.

Fit, and thin, Kaylee's figure is not pronounced, she has small breasts and narrow hips, that only manage to make her look younger. She does not wear makeup, and most often wears her hair down. If she's going to dress up, she washes her face and tosses her hair up. Or, if she's gonna get wild, curls her hair and maybe puts on some mascara. Maybe. Only if Zoe's going to help.

Physically, Kaylee has a few scars from her time growing up, same as any girl in an outer-rim planet would have. Scraped knees, jumping over fences, what-have-you, she's been there and done that, and suffered from it. However, she does have a few scars that cannot be explained by that, specifically, the bullet wound on her stomach. Though no one really sees her naked (much to her chagrin), the scar itself causes her great self-consciousness. Additionally, Kaylee has a few tattoos, the largest being a few flowers cascading across her back, a sunflower, some daisies. It's simple, but beautiful, and helps keep her true to herself and, pardon the pun, her roots.

Kaylee is most often found in a pair of over-alls and some brightly colored, floral-patterned shirt below. She is extremely casual, but when she's not in the engine room, can be found wearing pastels and florals, often in dresses. She likes to maintain her femininity, in all things.

Log Sample:Goo was new. Goo and a tube down her throat and last time she checked she'd gone to bed wearing pajamas, but now she was completely naked, dumped out on to the floor of a ship that was definitely not Serenity. What had happened? Had something gone wrong while she'd slept? The Alliance- Kaylee looked down at the newest tattoo, numbers that meant nothing to her. She certainly hadn't had that tattoo when she'd gone to bed, and it looked too fully-healed to have been given to her in the middle of the night.

What was happening?

Swallowing thickly, with difficulty due to her dry-as-cotton throat, Kaylee began to pay more attention to her surroundings, to the sound of running water, the voice telling her to go to the lifts. Lifts? That was, well, they didn't have those on Serenity, that much was for sure. Be kinda nice if they did...

And who were these people? She'd never seen them before in her life and some of them- some of them didn't even look human! Blue skin, and odd-colored hair. What planet had she woken up on?

Maybe the others were here. Oh no- if River were here-! That would be bad. Very, very bad.

"Cap'n? Cap'n?! Go shi what kind'a kuh wu place'm I in now?"

Comms Sample: [A young, plain woman appears on the screen, and Kaylee Frye looks uncomfortable. It's rather visible as she pushes her hair behind her ears, trying to figure out what exactly to say. She's not good at this part.]

Can someone tell me something 'bout this engine here? I heard it was slowing down, last, whatcha call it- jump. Back at home, on Serenity, I was the mechanic, and if we're gavin' engine troubles, I wanna take a look, before something real bad happens. Ships aren't supposed to be set adrift in the black. [She knew. First hand.]

And if there's already a mechanic, well, gosh, I'd really like to help out, any way I can. M'name's Kaylee.
